Cardle by Mayves

Mayves is a brand new design platform, started by Yvette Scheltema (Eindhoven, NL, 1973) and Denis Bégin (Noranda, CA, 1971). Their first, exciting original product is the Cardle.

Warm Wishes
The Cardle is a greeting card which can be folded into a candle holder in three easy steps. It is made out of flame retardant paper (Euro class B) which has been developed especially for the Cardle. The folding system (patent pending) is unique: the Cardle requires no cutting or pasting, and the construction fixes the candle in place, so there’s no need for an additional candle holder.

Yvette has designed the folding system and is responsible for product development. Denis is the graphic designer responsible for the first two illustration series; he is also the driving force behind the brand and marketing.

Combining architecture and craft, the Cardle marks a new era in the greeting card world. The idea is simple but revolutionary, and aims to bring back a touch of warmth in this increasingly digital age.

Light up your day
The Cardle – a card and candle holder in one – is the brighter, warmer way of sending a message. It boasts true Dutch design inspired by Japanese craftsmanship. The partly cut out illustrations – reminiscent of Japanese wod carvings – are lifted out of the Cardle once it has been folded. When the candle is lit inside the Cardle, a magical play of shadow and light appears.

Bright design
The Cardle has been made of specially developed paper, which has been treated with salts to make it flame retardant in an environmentally friendly manner. The paper is 100% recyclable. The illustrations are printed onto the Cardle using bio-ink. In keeping with their eco-friendly essence and the pure paper feel, the Cardles come tucked into cardboard sleeves. The sleeves, in turn, are packaged in beautifully crafted cardboard boxes which have been designed to serve as multifunctional displays.

Shine a little light
The Cardle display boxes have been well thought out. The display boxes can be postioned in different ways to accomodate the seller’s space requirements. Each display box contains 21 sleeves: 20 for sale and 1 free sample to show the Cardles in-store. The display boxes are sold per series.

Send it, gift it, or treat yourself...
The first two series of Cardles are Scenes from the Woods (#01) and Scenes from the Lowlands (#02). Each series consists of three different designs. The Cardles are packed per series; each sleeve contains a full series of three Cardles, complete with envelopes. The folding and safety instructions – in both text and image – have been printed on the inside of each envelope as well as on the sleeves. This packaging concept makes the Cardle ideal for sending, gifting, or as a decorative treat for yourself.
