Light Meters & Spectrophotometers
Though light meters & spectrophotometers serve quite different roles, they are similar pieces of equipment in terms of what they actually do. A light meter, typically used in photography and cinema, is used to measure the amount of light being transmitted at it. This is useful in situations where the amount of light needs to be managed, such as at a photo shoot or film set. The light meter is typically held in the shot to test the light in the specific area that is being photographed or filmed, and the photographer or director of photography can then adjust the lighting as needed. Unlike the light meter, a spectrophotometer is used to measure a light transmission's properties within the visible spectrum. To over–simplify what this means, a spectrophotometer can allow a user to analyse the light being reflected off or transmitted from an object or material in order to learn more about that material. One example use of a spectrophotometer is to measure the diffusivity of a medium.
Though the products are similar in purpose, it is unlikely that a spectrophotometer manufacturer or spectrophotometer supplier will stock light meters. Spectrophotometers are very specialist, used in many scientific applications. Light meters on the other hand are more consumer orientated, and a light meter manufacturer produce their products with that in mind. While it may take a scientist or chemist to analyse the composition of a chemical using a spectrophotometer, a light meter can be used by anyone, no matter how qualified. A typical light meter manufacturer will produce other items within the film and photography industry.
