Neon Signs

Neon signs utilise a form of illumination that is created by running an electrical charge through a sealed glass tube that contains neon or other gases. Neon signs are ideal for drawing attention to displays or shop fronts, for example, as well as being used in warning signs. Neon gas itself was discovered in 1898 and named after the Greek word neos, meaning new. The difficulties in producing significant quantities of the gas were overcome by Georges Claude, the neon signs manufacturer who developed this form of lighting as a commercial business. Wholesale neon signs such as those found on productpilot.com have been widely used in advertising and decorative displays.

In spite of the name, neon is not the only gas used by a neon signs manufacturer. It is used to produce colours such as red or orange, but to create the various hues of blue, green, yellow and violet, argon gas and mercury are employed. When the mercury vaporises in the tube, it produces an ultraviolet light that is absorbed by a phosphor coating on the glass. By using various combinations of gasses and phosphor coatings, wholesale neon signs can be produced in an enormous range of colours.

Fabricating a neon sign requires the glass tubes to be bent into the required shape before they are filled with gas. Small sections of the glass are individually heated and then worked into the configuration of the design, with additional lengths of glass tube being added as required. Each of these lengths can be coated in a different type of phosphor so that the final product shines with the desired shades of light. The wide range of colours and designs of neon signage allows for unique displays, and many view them as an art form, commissioning pieces created to their own specifications.
