“The fun goes on. But I want to push my label PAPP UP to a new dimension.“ Cantemir Gheorghiu is serious about his latest product, PAPP UV, a new line of protection sunglasses made from cardboard. Fun, functional, sustainable, and one hundred percent hand-crafted in Berlin. PAPP UV offers a UV 400 polarization filter, which is guaranteed by a certified optician. The glasses are coated with a hypoallergenic and water repellent lacquer. The bendable aluminum temple tips can be easily adjusted to achieve the perfect fit. The frames require that a minimal stock of the raw materials be purchased, and then be custom cut and varnished. Two years ago, the inventive and cheerful communications designer popped up on Berlin’s fashion firmament with the PAPPBRILLE. Papp derives from the German word for cardboard, and Brille means glasses. Yet Cantemir’s eye wear doesn’t make you see better – there aren’t any lenses in it – it simply makes you look better, and quipsters, hipsters, and club scene bohemians lounging and dancing on the banks of the River Spree rapidly fell for the fun factor. But this is not where it stopped. After the unexpected success of what began as a party gag, Cantemir, who is 30 and the sole proprietor of his business, has 10000 pieces manufactured per month. He sells them around the world, along with additional products such as PAPP neckties, bow-ties, and handbags – all made out of cardboard. Naturally. Now, the important difference and big leap for Cantemir’s label is that PAPP UV provides a function other than fun: real UV protection. “I hope that PAPP UV will surprise one or the other skeptic out there, who may be asking, Sunglasses made out of cardboard? How is that going to work?”, explains Cantemir. The popular sunglasses feature a contemporary, minimalist design and come in two shapes and two different hues. They also have advantages that ordinary sunglasses lack. Made from an organic combination of wood and cardboard, the PAPP UV frame is created from a single unit of material and is thus lightweight and extremely resilient. So much so, that the sunglasses can easily be stored in a book or in a pant pocket without breaking. PAPP UV takes great pride in the fact that it is both hand-crafted in Germany – Cantemir has his products folded in sheltered workshops in Berlin and lacquered by local carpenters - and a sustainable product.
