AMICOR™ - THE ANTI-MICROBIAL PERFORMANCE FIBER
Amicor™ was developed following pioneering research into “Late Injection Fiber Technology”. This has enabled the company to produce fibers that contain a reservoir of finely dispersed additives that have been added to the polymer before the fiber is spun. Significantly, this approach ensures that the additives are contained within the unique fiber structure rather than simply acting as a surface coating giving the distinct advantage of durability in use. When Amicor™ fiber is used at the recommended blend level the slow diffusion of the additives results in long-lasting protection of an entire fabric. Amicor™ With New BPD Compliant Functional Additives From Sanitized® The Amicor™ technology has been a tried and trusted global brand since its launch in 1998 by Courtaulds/Acordis. The original versions of Amicor™ were the first antimicrobial fibres to attain the Oeko Tex Class 1 certification and feature on the Oeko Tex White list of approved antimicrobial textiles. It was also compliant to the REACH legislation. The original versions of Amicor™ were initially registered with the Biocidals Product Directive and there were never any issues with the safety and environmental impact of the additives used in these original Amicor™ fibres. However, it became clear to the suppliers of the antimicrobial additives used in Amicor™ that the volumes of additives that would be used in these products were going to be quite small. So, as the BPD legislation progressed, suppliers withdrew their support of these functional additives. This meant that the original Amicor™ fibres had to be withdrawn from the European Market by November 2011. Innovation has always been the trademark of the Amicor™ brand and in keeping with this long standing tradition, we have developed a new version of Amicor™ using chemicals from Sanitized® that is fully compliant with the BPD legislation. This has been available to all our European based customers since November 2011. This new version of Amicor™ retains its Oeko Tex Class 1 status and is REACH SVHC compliant. The tried and trusted antimicrobial performance and durability standards set by Amicor™ are also retained in this new version of Amicor™, as are the blend requirements for the Brand certification. The BPD legislation reviews and authorizes ALL biocidal products before they can be placed on the European market. The directive has three main objectives: 1. To harmonize the European Market for biocidal products and their active substances such that the product authorization in one Member State can be recognized in other Member States. 2. To provide a high level of protection for people, animals and the environment (from the use of biocidal products) through risk assessment. 3. To ensure products are sufficiently effective against the target species. Amicor™ has always placed strong emphasis on human and environmental safety. This new Amicor™ fibre with chemicals from Sanitized® is manufactured using a “Green Technology” in which the functional additive is incorporated into the core of the fibre. It is not a topical application and so the losses to the environment during manufacture, during yarn and fabric processing, dyeing and finishing and in final consumer use and laundering are minimal. The core technology of reducing bacteria and fungi and the consequent odor formation reduction means that it is possible for users of Amicor™ fabrics and garments to reassess the laundry strategies with a view to achieving significant reductions in the frequency and temperature requirements of laundering. MECHANISM OF ANTI-ALLERGY ACTION OF AMICOR™ FIBERS The mechanism of anti-allergic functionality of Amicor™ fibers can be explained by a patented life cycle of House Dust Mites. Dust Mites are microscopic organisms which live in dark, warm and humid environment. There are up to 2 million dust mites festering in an average bed. Research and scientific studies have shown that 70% of all asthma cases can be attributed to Der P1 allergen contained in the excreta of House Dust Mites (HDM). We slough off dead skin cells while we sleep which get deposited on bed and beddings. Human Perspiration and Warm, Humid conditions create an ideal environment for the growth of fungi. Fungi transform dead skin cells into soft, edible and more nutritious food source for dust mites, allowing them to thrive and proliferate. Dust mites leave microscopic droppings which dry up, get air-borne with time and passes through textiles and beddings. We inhale this during sleep and with continuous exposure we get sensitized to these allergens which trigger asthma attack. Children are particularly sensitive to this problem. Asthma generally appears in the first eighteen months of life, precisely due to the presence of DER P1. Amicor™ fibers use a unique technology to protect against house dust mites. Amicor™ fibers have locked-in antifungal properties. The special additives inside the fiber inhibit growth of fungi and thus prevent skin flakes to get transformed into nutritious food source for mites. Amicor™ prevents the house dust mites from living inside textiles by taking away the food source. This breaks the life cycle of the mites. AMICOR™ - APPLICATIONS Inherently soft to the touch, Amicor™ is available in a broad variety of fiber specifications designed to blend intimately with all natural and man-made fibers. It can be dyed to the deepest, brightest and most delicate shades. It can also be available in optic white, for end-uses where lasting whiteness is needed. Always blended with other fibers, it takes on the aesthetic of the major fiber in the blend from cotton or wool to viscose, Tactel, Tencel, polyester as well as more sophisticated blends. Amicor™ is an extremely versatile fiber. It can be processed into all spun and non-woven processing and is readily knitted or woven with filament yarns. The result is extremely soft and gentle, suitable for clothing, bedding and many other less demanding end-uses. Extensive wash testing has shown that the fiber retains its performance at all wash temperatures for at least 100 washes, the expected life of most fabrics and products. Washing and cleaning deals with the dirt you can see - Amicor™ deals with the dirt you can’t see, and some potential irritants and risks to our long term health. This durability has led to Amicor™ being adopted by leading manufacturers in a diverse range of consumer markets where lasting anti-microbial properties offer significant benefits for the end-user. All Beds, Mattresses And Bedding Products - provides anti-allergen performance and long-term freshness throughout the bed - not only for those who suffer from indoor allergens but also for those who want hygienic and healthier bedding. Baby Bedding And Clothing – provides protection from allergens for infants. At six months, as their inherited immune system diminishes, babies are at their most vulnerable to allergens and can become sensitized for life. Amicor™ in bedding and clothing will help reduce a baby’s exposure to air-borne allergens at this important stage in their life. Amicor™ products retain their allergy control and in-built freshness despite the high frequency of wash cycles required for this use. Carpets - provides allergen and dust mite prevention in wool and acrylic blend carpets and could be an effective and safer alternative to the use of low durability pesticides to control dust mite and their allergens. Towels - provides protection from the risk of bacterial contamination in domestic and public environments, without compromising the absorbency and softness of towels and roller towels. Clothing – Amicor™ works like an in-built deodorant inside clothing. Like deodorant, once you have put it on you can forget about it for the rest of the day or night. Amicor™ blends inside t-shirts or smarter woven fabrics and takes on the aesthetic of the main fiber and keeps you not only looking smart but feeling fresh all day long. Sports Wear – Amicor™ improves the performance, comfort and wearability of modern natural and man-made fabrics. In sportswear, the fiber retains “as new‟ freshness for seasonal sportswear such as ski-ing and sailing clothing as well as skin-tight fitness and layered sports underwear by preventing the formation of odor forming microbes during use and between washes. Socks And Footwear Linings – helping to prevent odor in sports shoes and walking boots, Amicor™ also provides protection from the fungi responsible for athletes‟ foot. Healthcare Textiles And Uniforms – from bed linen, curtains, healthcare uniforms and food preparation clothing, Amicor™ prevents the growth of the harmful organisms on textiles that pose additional risk to infection control and hygiene.
