  • Conductive polymers for use as textile heating element
    Conductive organic polymers are outstanding materials with exciting properties. Besides several other applications - especially in the field of high-performance electric devices and photovoltaic technology - they can be used for the creation of conductive textile materials. Commercial dispersions of such polymers can be applied to textile constructions in a downstream coating process leading to poor add-ons and relatively low conductivity. In contrast, the DTNW has developed strategies to deposit conductive polymers by an oxidative in-situ polymerization directly on the textile surface. Here, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was durably immobilized on various textile carriers made of polyester, polyamide and cotton following this new approach. The extremely high achievable add-ons lead to extraordinary high-conductive textiles with surface resistances down to 10 W/sq, which can be used as textile heating elements. For example, by applying a voltage of 12 V temperatures of more than 100 °C are practicable. Moreover, the desired temperature is easily adjustable by the absolute load and the applied voltage. Such conductive fabrics and non-wovens can be used, e.g., in carpets, electric blankets or automotive seat heaters.

  • Nanotechnology and Sol-Gel-Technique
    DTNW investigates the enormous potential of nanotechnology for the functionalization of textile materials since many years. If there is a need to improve wear-resistance, to achieve antistatic properties, to make surfaces water-, oil- or soil repellent or to make it more durable against aggressive atmospheres, there are manifold nano-technological approaches to solve such problems. Besides many others properties, nanotechnology allows, e.g., developing textiles with catalytic, antibacterial and magnetic properties.

  • Surface Functionalization for Innovative Filter Media
    Chemical and physical methods for specific functionalization of fiber surfaces open interesting perspectives to affect the characteristic and performance of textile filter media and may be used to create additional selectivity. Research on innovative methods for specific functionalization of fiber surfaces is a main topic in the research activities of DTNW. In the context of this long-term work, the application in the design of textile filter media was strong point for many years. Funded by the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, DTNW, the Institut für Energie- und Umwelttechnik IUTA e.V. and the Departments of Thermal Process Engineering (Thermische Verfahrenstechnik) and of Combustion and Gasdynamics (Verbrennung und Gasdynamik) of the University Duisburg-Essen founded a competence center for filtration research and functionalized surfaces, the „Zentrum für Filtrationsforschung und funktionalisierte Oberflächen in NRW - ZF3“. The objective of this joint venture was to develop and provide facilities for filter testing under real-life conditions, and to allow the evaluation of the potential of surface functionalization for industrial manufacturers. The scientific and technical orientation of ZF3 mainly refers tot he filtration of toxic gases, submicron dust particles and droplets from air. Examples of topics put up fort he research on surface functionalization are improved oil drainage from pressurized air filters, thin-layer electrets from UV cross-linked polymers, and selective adsorption properties. The expertise of DTNW in this field provided important impulses by introducing the perspectives of supramolecular chemistry, nano-composites, and photochemical surface modification. Aside from topics of air filtration, other research projects were concerned with aspects of liquid filtration. Example are the evaluation of a laser-induced micro-roughning of filter fibers on the selectivity in blood filtration and the UV-grafting of poly(ethylene glycols) for efficient anti-fouling properties in water purification.

    DTNW Öffentliche Prüfstelle GmbH offers testing and survey services for industrial and private customers.
