The Automotive Industry Export Council (AIEC) represents the interests of the seven motor vehicle manufacturers/exporters in South Africa, namely BMW, Ford, Isuzu Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, 14 commercial vehicle assemblers/exporters as well as 500 automotive component suppliers. Vehicles and automotive components to the value of R169,4 billion (US$13 billion) were exported to 149 countries around the world with the export value to 16 of the export destinations more than doubling from 2016 to 2017. The South African automotive industry’s vision is to double vehicle manufacturing to around one million vehicles per annum by 2020 with an associated broadening and deepening of the component supply base in the country as well. South Africa represents many opportunities of mutual benefit.
