Duncan Meerding Design is a small-scale Australian owned furniture and lighting firm based in Tasmania; a state renowned for its breath-taking natural beauty and vast wilderness. Having achieved wide-spread recognition within Australia over the past 6 years, Duncan's work has recently been catapulted onto the international stage, having been short-listed for design awards in Europe and North America. This has led to pieces being bought by customers in over 10 countries.
The relationship between light and shadow, of light dispersion and texture are integral to Duncan's design process. Losing his vision at age 18, with less than 5% sight remaining, Duncan's work reflects the alternate sensory world in which he presides. His furniture and lighting work focus on the beauty of form and the tactile nature of the materials from which they are shaped, embracing the natural characteristics of the timber. His work is a celebration of our intrinsic relationship with nature.
Seeking an alternative to the sterile, mass-produced and consumed objects which litter our modern-day existence; each design is created with a focus on longevity rather than mimicking quick-moving trends. They should be timeless objects intended to be treasured and passed-down to future generations. Sustainability and a focus on the environment are present in every step of Duncan's process. The majority of timber is sourced either from waste materials or else from fast-growing, robust timber varieties. Marrying traditional, hand-made techniques with modern manufacturing technologies, small-scale production ensures that each object is built to last. The majority of all design and manufacturing processes are conducted in house. Where outside input is needed, it is outsourced locally to small companies and craftspeople in order to maintain the quality and integrity of the final object.
As the firm has grown, care has been taken to insure that it stays true to the core principles of environmental sustainability, ethical practice and the relationship between the maker the object and the customer.
An integration of art, craft and design, our products are as equally influenced by the manufacturing process as the manufacturing process is informed by the chosen materials. Products by Duncan Meerding Design are divided into three main categories: interior and exterior lighting solutions, flat-packable hardwood furniture and large-scale sculptural objects designed for commercial and gallery use.
Perhaps the most widely recognised products, the Cracked Log Lamp and Stump lighting series are crafted from salvaged timber, once destined to be burnt. These designs play to the unique characteristics of each hand-selected log, adding rustic appeal to one’s home or outside setting.
Duncan's Leaning Leaf table belongs to a hardwood furniture line, which has been designed to be flat packed in order to limit the environmental impact of international freight, and shipping costs. The Australian Eucalyptus timber for this design has been selected due to its robust and fast-growing nature, making it a much more sustainable option over other, much slower growing hardwoods which have traditionally been favoured. Each table is hand-finished, emphasising its sleek curves. Similarly, the Propeller Pendant Light series has also been designed in order to be flat packed.
Duncan Meerding Design also produces one-off large scale sculptural pieces on commission aimed at galleries and commercial businesses.
