Kuraray Co., Ltd.

The Kuraray Group, which includes Kuraray Co., Ltd., its consolidated and unconsolidated subsidiaries and affiliated companies, embraces about 80 companies in Japan and abroad with approximately 7,000 employees. Each company within the Group, while demonstrating its individual character, is committed to satisfy the diverse needs of society in their field of business.

In 1926 Kuraray Co., Ltd. was established in Kurashiki City, Japan, where it started the industrial production of viscose rayon. Through intensive research and development the company succeeded in building up extensive expertise and technological strength in the fields of polymer chemistry, synthetic chemistry and chemical engineering. Thanks to this technological strength and extensive expertise Kuraray was able to develop highly innovative products in a wide range of selected businesses.

Innovation-minded

Today Kuraray develops and manufactures quality and innovative products ranging from synthetic resins, fine chemicals, non-woven fabrics, man-made leather to laser discs and medical products. A number of products developed and manufactured by Kuraray have become world-leading products. Among these products are: polyvinyl alcohol fiber KURALON™, polyvinyl alcohol resin POVAL™, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer EVAL™, man made leather CLARINO™ and isoprene-based fine chemicals for perfumes, pharmaceuticals, and other specialised applications.

The world's largest producer of  PVOH and EVOH resins and films, Kuraray operates production sites in Japan, the USA, Europe and Singapore.   As a leader in high gas barrier technology and development, Kuraray established fully-owned subsidiary EVAL Europe N.V. in Antwerp, Belgium for the production and sales of its EVAL™ EVOH barrier resins in the Europe-Middle East-Africa region.

Kuraray acquired Plantic Technologies Ltd. of Australia in 2015.  EVAL™ EVOH is used to provide food packaging with barrier properties, reducing environmental impact through versatile optimised structure design. PLANTIC™ is itself composed of up to 80% renewable materials, and used primarily for high barrier trays and skin packs. This ready-to-use structure offers a direct reduction in the food packaging material's environmental footprint.

Although they are not EVAL™ EVOH products, PLANTIC™ and KURARISTER™ transparent high-barrier retortable film are commercialised in Europe by development teams based at Kuraray's EVAL Europe N.V. site in Antwerp, Belgium.

PLANTIC™ biopolymer

Kuraray acquired Plantic Technologies Ltd. of Australia in 2015.  EVAL™ EVOH is used to provide food packaging with barrier properties, reducing environmental impact through versatile optimised structure design. PLANTIC™ is itself composed of up to 80% renewable materials, and used primarily for high barrier trays and skin packs. This ready-to-use structure offers a direct reduction in the food packaging material's environmental footprint.

A wide selection of PLANTIC™ grades is available depending on the application requirements. PLANTIC™ does not contain plasticisers, compete with food streams or contain GMO plant sources.

EVAL™ EVOH

Kuraray has been manufacturing and marketing ethylene vinyl-alcohol copolymers (EVOH) under the name EVAL™ since 1972, and remains the world leader in EVOH production and market development. EVAL™ is one of Kuraray's core businesses and is produced globally in Europe, America and Asia-Pacific. The sales and technical development of EVAL™ is supported by specialised local teams in each region.

EVAL™ is commercially available in two forms: resins (plastic granules for coextrusion) and films (for lamination). The EVAL™ product line provides the world's widest available grade range of EVOH resins and films. These unique high barrier polymers are particularly suited for preserving quality and avoiding waste in food, medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and industrial packaging.  They also help use energy more efficiently and reduce environmental impact in automotive fuel systems, building and construction materials and agricultural films.

The gas barrier properties of an EVAL™ layer ensure that the flavour and the quality of the food are well preserved for an extended period of time. An EVAL™ layer also keeps the Modified Atmosphere and aromas inside the package, extending the shelf life of fresh food.

EVAL™ offers the following benefits:

- outstanding gas barrier properties

- prevents oxygen from penetrating the package

- gives fresh food longer shelf life without antioxidants

- locks aromas in

- extends shelf life

- protects sensitive vitamin content

- protects against oustside odour and contamination like MOSH/MOAH mineral oils
