The Hohenstein Institute is an accredited test laboratory and research institute. Its work first and foremost in-volves the testing and certification of textiles. Besides these services, the institute offers research and development in the field of textile products and applications of all kinds relating to its core competencies. This includes not only contract-based research but also research pro-jects with public funding. It additionally offers numerous further education courses and programmes aimed for example at industry, dealing with all issues throughout the textiles production chain.
The Hohenstein Institute was founded in Bönnigheim (Germany) in 1946. Some 700 staff are currently em-ployed at its headquarters and its laboratories and offic-es based in Europe, Asia and America. The international client base does not just include companies along the entire textiles production chain but increasingly, those from other branches such as the automotive industry, medicine and investment / consumer goods.
The laboratory tests and investigations on offer extend from classical material testing through quality assess-ment of a wide range of product characteristics to the evaluation of product performance for many different applications. Comparative goods testing provides for targeted product development with an eye to possible competitors.
Product labels such as the Hohenstein Quality Label or the UV Standard 801 assist manufacturers and traders when marketing the tested textiles. As a founding member of the OEKO-TEX® Association, the Ho-henstein Institute is one of the most internationally important facilities for textile hazardous substance tests as per OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, the certifi-cation of sustainable production facilities as per STeP by OEKO-TEX®, and the issue of the Made in Green by OEKO-TEX® product label for de-monstrably harmless, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible textiles.
Hohenstein's numerous accreditations include its recog-nition as a test and certification centre (European Noti-fied Body 0555) for personal protective equipment (PPE).
