Computer simulations are an indispensable tool in the design and optimization of products and production processes, services, communication processes and work processes. Fraunhofer ITWM focuses on the development of mathematical applications for industry, technology and economy. Mathematical approaches to practical challenges are the specific competences of the institute and complement knowledge in engineering and economics in an optimal way. The main emphases are surface quality inspection, visuali-zation of large data sets, optimization of production processes, virtual material design and analysis of 3d models of microstructures.

Especially in virtual material design and analysis of 3D microstructures Fraunhofer ITWM has developed know-how over many years; the focus is on flow in porous media, such as filtration or the optimization of complex three-dimensional structures of porous materials and composite materials, with the aim to achieve certain material properties.

Microstructure simulation and virtual material design


Under the overall concept of "GeoDict" we are developing software for the optimization of complex 3d geometric structures of porous materials and composites. Very different material properties are computed in complex 3d structures and successively improved by parameter variation.

Computer-aided design of material and simulation of microstructures


We are dealing with computer-aided methods to improve resp. optimize porous and non-porous compo-sites with complex microstructure, particularly non-wovens and weaves. Process steps for the fabrication of composites are also optimized. The objective of this is to dimension resource conserving materials with improved multifunctional properties by means of computer simulations. Among numerous projects re-garding light weight construction, recyclability and heat insulation we are increasingly working on questions concerning the saving and storage of energy.

The software package FeelMath presents a unique selling position for the optimization of complex 3D structures of porous materials and composites. FeelMath is providing a highly efficient general purpose solution procedure for nonlinear elasticity problems on complex microstructures. It is possible to simulate all basic nonlinear mechanical effects (elastoplasticity, viscoelasticity, damage). FeelMath is integrated as a modul into the virtual material laboratory GeoDict (of Math2Market GmbH). A wide range of materials can be treated by the developed numerical procedures, as for example materials made of synthetic fibres or natural fibres, fibre-reinforced plastics, particle-reinforced metals, metallic alloys, porous geomaterials.
