Three-dimensional PCBs skilfully make optimum use of restricted installation space. Furthermore, the possibility of connecting parts of a circuit on different PCBs or PCB segments directly to each other replaces the need for plug-in connectors and cables. However, as well as increasing the packing density, reducing weight, and increasing the reliability of the board, they open up new design possibilities and reduce system costs.


Requirements placed on PCBs have never been as high as they are today: Restricted space, complex control technology, PCBs that run hot – we could go on and on.

Three-dimensional PCBs can be produced using different procedures, structure variants, and materials. Häusermann offers three procedures, all of which use different stack-ups and have different technical properties, design benefits, and limits.

One-time bends with HSMtec
Selective integration of copper wires and profiles makes it possible to produce self-supporting 3D PCB structures. Electrical and thermal connections can be fully integrated into the PCB. The diffusion of light or light focus can be regulated by means of flexible but self-supporting PCB segments. HSMtec is particularly beneficial in restricted spaces such as for headlights.

This offers a high degree of flexibility for the most varied multi-dimensional applications:

  • Self-supporting, stable 3D structures without additional assembly
  • Cost savings through the replacement of plug and cable connections
  • Optical flexibility through the individual orientation of separate LEDs in lighting applications
  • Max. bending angle ± 90°


Dynamic bends with rigid-flex

The rigid-flex technology is extremely versatile with regard to layout options and geometries and has therefore become an indispensable part of modern connection solutions.

  • Symmetrical and asymmetrical stack-ups
  • Total thicknesses from 0.8 mm to 2.0 mm
  • Multiple flexible layers possible
  • Bending radius at least 1 mm
  • Maximum bending angle 180°


Design-to-cost with semi-flex

Semi-flex PCBs are an alternative to conventional rigid-flex PCBs and offer significant cost advantages. They are therefore well suited for static bending stress during assembly and installation.

  • Cost-effective alternative to rigid-flex
  • Bending radius at least 5 mm
  • Maximum bending angle 180°
