The town of Reghin, located in northern Romania, near the Carpathian Mountains, is also known as the “town of violins”, because it is representative for the musical instrument production in Romania. In this region, there are numerous workshops that produce mostly stringed musical instruments.
In Reghin and in Romania, the largest and oldest musical instrument company is Hora S.A., having a tradition of 65 years. It is hard to believe that the factory, which currently employs around 300 people, was founded by only two maestro luthiers, Alexandru Apateanu and Roman Boianciuc, in 1951, when the first 37 violins were built. Nowadays, Hora S.A. produces around 90 000 musical instruments out of which 12 000 bowed instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, d. bass and psalteries and 75 000 pinching instruments such as classic, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins, mandolas, ukuleles, Irish bouzoukis and others. Hora also builds wooden wind instruments such as pipe recorder and panpipes as well as educational instruments, bags, cases and other accessories. Recently, Hora was extremely successful in designing and marketing ethnic traditional instruments such as mandolins, mandolas, Irish bouzoukis, balalaikas, domras, cobzas, Appalachian dulcimers, hammered dulcimers, panpipes and others.
The spruce and maple tone wood, originating from the Carpathian Mountains, is stored in warehouses for natural aging during 5-10 years, thus receiving exceptional acoustical qualities and stability. Exotic wood such as ebony, rosewood, mahogany, red cedar, brazilwood, and cedar is also used in the fabrication of instruments. The craftsmanship of the workers and technicians also contributes to the stunning quality of the products. Our instruments speak for themselves. Here is, for instance, the opinion of the renowned violinist DAVID OISTRAH after playing with a Hora violin: ”The hand made violins of master Roman Boianciuc, most suited for the performing artist, have impressed me most favorably, especially by the perfection of their shape. Their tone is delicate, clean, bright, satisfying the highest demands” (Bucharest 18 Sept. 1967). To honor this tradition, the professional instruments for the great Philharmonics and soloists are built in a special luthier workshop.
The musical instruments produced by HORA are quality-confirmed by the ISO 9001 certificate and comply with the demands of a very broad spectrum of customers. They provide support to beginners, are reliable for experienced players and give inspiration to virtuosos.
Hora exports over 80% of its musical instruments all over the world to well-known specialized companies from Germany, France, United Kingdom, Israel, Spain, Italy, Scandinavian countries, as well as USA, Canada, Japan, Russia and others.
The International Fair for Musical Instruments in Frankfurt, in which Hora has been participating annually for 36 years, to display its instruments, has been an excellent opportunity to establish new business and to continue established business partnerships and long-lasting friendships. Musikmesse was an excellent opportunity for Hora to find new customers and keep the business relations with the old ones. This year, we are proud to welcome you in our stand 8.0A17.
