Our Profile


The ITA-Group is a recognised provider for research, development and training. With more than 350 employees ITA covers fibre-based high-performance materials, textile semi-finished products and their manufacturing technologies.


Our main areas of research


The basis for our research areas such as mobility, building and home textiles, health, power supply, information and communication are our competencies in the field of material engineering and production. Lifelong learning and job-related qualification are essential parts of our scientific activities and in technology transfer.


The Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University


The Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University is directly connected to the faculty of mechanical engineering and is headed by Prof. Thomas Gries.


Within the scope of a joint professorship “Biohybrids and Medical Textiles”, Prof. Stefan Jockenhövel heads the department Life Sciences and Medical Textiles.

As our link between academic research and industry, ITA GmbH in Aachen under the management of Markus Beckmann is an established partner for industry-projects and technology transfer since 2002.

Our Research


Mobility


ITA responds to the rising mobility-needs with manufacturing methods for textile reinforced semi-finished products. These textile preforms are the basis for innovative lightweight constructions and customised com-posites materials, enabling lower CO²-emissions of automobiles. Fur-thermore, our research comprises the manufacturing of non-crimp fab-rics and braids as well as the automation of the preform assembly. ITA’s textile semi-finished products also provide many solutions for the interior, from ambient lightning to sensor technology and to adaptive structures.


Information and Communication


Smart Textiles as cross-sectional technology allow the integration of sensors, actuating elements and physical functions in fibre-based design components: for the illumination, air-conditioning or adaption – conductive textiles become functional components.


Health


Our heart surgeon Prof. Stefan Jockenhövel, as holder of a joint profes-sorship at ITA and Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedical Engineering of RWTH Aachen, fosters the development of patient-individual implants for heart and lung surgery. He and his team develop new textile fibres and scaffolds, as well as fibre-based implants for regenerative medicine. ITA’s Smart Medical Devices allow an individual support of patients and staff in especially challenging care and workplace situations.


Building and Home Textiles


A reduction of CO²-emissions during concrete production and complete-ly new scopes of design are realised by thin-walled textile concrete building components. Glass fibres as reinforcement material enable thinner concrete building components. Besides, they allow the realisation of light-conducting concrete elements and the integration of energy generation in façade systems.


Efficiency of Energy and Resources


The reduction of energy consumption in the textile  manufacturing chain is in ITA’s research-focus as well as the development of high-performance materials that make energy conversion more efficient. An energy-efficient production of carbon fibres is the prerequisite for a broader use of composites. The exploration und utilisation of renewable raw material, e.g. of natural fibres and biopolymers, open up the poten-tial of an economy that is no longer exclusively based on mineral oil.
