Blade Guitars and Gary E. Levinson Acoustics Guitars
I started repairing guitars in 1964. It began as a hobby and quickly grew to a passion. During the late 60’s I was part of a small but exclusive repair shop in Champaign, Illinois. We met many of the icons of the 60’s and 70’s when they came to play at the University of Illinois, where I was also studying applied and natural sciences. Many of the world’s finest instruments came across our benches during this period.
During my graduate studies at the University of Basel I continued guitar work and founded Guitars by Levinson in Basel, Switzerland in 1977. But my passion for guitars was too great. Guitars by Levinson became famous across Europe for repairs from historical instruments to guitar synthesizers – and the finest vintage instruments.
In the early 80’s I began consulting for guitar manufactures in Japan and Korea. During this time I learned about the available manufacturing technology in great detail. The Blade Guitar line was born as the Levinson Music Team of guitar and electronic technicians developed new ideas for electronics, hardware and manufacturing techniques - ideas that were previously considered “too revolutionary.” In October 1987 Blade Guitars was launched and the first instruments shown at the Tokyo Music Show that year. The 1988 Frankfurt Musikmesse heralded the launch into Europe and the award of “The Best of 1988” from International Musician and Recording World in the Great Britain
Gary E. Levinson Acoustic Guitars took the same idea further in 2008. By using uncompromising manufacturing techniques we developed the concept of True Tone – instruments that vibrate more freely and effectively, creating a fuller, richer tone and a quicker reaction to the players touch. All Levinson Acoustics exhibit simplicity of design to enhance the subtle beauty of the fine materials used. They are constructed to deliver quick response, exceptional string-to-string balance and extraordinary tonal intricacies, rich on harmonics.
Over the years we have had the privilege to do work for many great musicians. From Leo Kottke to the Grateful Dead; Bob Dylan to Frankie Goes to Hollywood; Rory Gallagher to Stevie Ray Vaughan to name just a few.
The ideas that make our guitars revolutionary were born in the repair shop and this continues today. Blade Guitars and Gary E. Levinson Acoustic Guitars are the result of almost 50 years of responding to the needs of guitarists – GUITARISTS LIKE YOU!
