The MANU brand stands for jewellery as “the dot atop the I”. Experts at this jewellery atelier in Hameln, Germany craft small series which prove that this brand lives the philosophy implicit in its name: because manu is the Latin word for “hand”. Skilled goldsmiths manually fabricate rings, pendants, chokers and jewellery for the ears and wrists, as well as cleverly designed interchangeable clasps.
Some 300 pieces comprise the jewellery collection, which is always up to date because it’s augmented with numerous new designs each spring and fall. The focus of MANU’s unmistakable design is love for “the architecture of the small form”, as the firm’s founder Ilse Ebert phrased it in her preface to the manufactory in 1987. With her design concept, this visionary goldsmith primarily had her sights set on style-conscious, self-confident women. This successful formula is uncompromisingly continued by MANU’s current managing director Johannes Weege and his ten-person team. “We rely on substantive design rather than glaring bling”, explains Johannes Weege, who has directed the business since 1998.
Weege’s philosophy is to offer jewellery that combines outstanding design and affordable prices. He achieves both thanks to the inventiveness and joy of experimentation that distinguish this brand’s designers, as well as through manual fabrication of the collections in small series. MANU’s creations are sleek and elegant, sometimes organic and other times geometrical, and they feature elegantly matte surfaces that can be graphic and austere or playfully casual, but always offer excellent wearing comfort.
Coloured gemstones or pearls add unostentatious accents. Exciting combinations of materials, (e.g. silver, gold and natural rubber) add special refinement to the strong character of these richly varied pieces of jewellery. Clever clasps, conceived as versatile interchangeable closures, further enrich the collection. These invite each wearer to individually design her piece of jewellery to suit her personal taste. This idea is further underscored by the punning slogan: “the dot atop the I”. Founded by the goldsmith Ilse Ebert and her husband Horst in 1987, MANU has been represented at international trade fairs ever since. Johannes Weege became the manufactory’s managing director in 1998. Working with customers throughout Europe, MANU produces silver jewellery with gold elements, manufactured in small series. Along with workshop masters Hajo Delius and Thorsten Bartels, MANU’s designers also include Stefanie Frye, Martina König, Susanne Weege and Ralf Werner.
