Putumayo World Music was established by in 1993 by Founder/CEO Dan Storper to introduce people to other cultures through great international music. Putumayo has become known for its upbeat, melodic compilations of world and American roots music characterized by the company’s mottos: “Guaranteed to make you feel good!” and “Celebrate the World!”
Putumayo’s album covers feature the distinctive art of British illustrator Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style embodies one of the company’s goals: to connect the traditional with the contemporary to create products that people will love. By combining appealing music and visuals with creative retail marketing, Putumayo has developed a unique brand identity, a rarity in today’s artist-based music industry.
Putumayo is considered a pioneer and leader in establishing a non-traditional market for music, having developed a global network of more than 5,000 book, gift, health food and other specialty retailers, in addition to record stores. Its core audience consists of “Cultural Creatives,” the term for global-minded people with an interest in travel and the arts.
The Putumayo Kids division was created to inspire children to learn about the world. Since the release of the best-selling World Playground CD in 1999, Putumayo Kids has become one of the world’s leading children’s record labels, winning critical acclaim and honors from Parents’ ChoiceAwards (US) and many others. Putumayo is committed to helping communities in the countries where the music originates and has contributed more than $1 million to worthwhile non-profit organizations including Amnesty International, Mercy Corps and Coffee Kids.
As consumer awareness of world music grows, Putumayo continues to develop creative ways to present exciting global music and fun, cultural children’s products that inspire curiosity about the world. Putumayo is proud to present new products that fit to our companies motto: "Guaranteed to make you feel good"
