The Living Art of Piano Making

Piano manufacturer Steingraeber & Söhne

Steingraeber’s upright and grand pianos are handcrafted in the time-honoured tradition of piano building since 1852 and are among the finest instruments produced by an elite group of manufacturers. Steingraeber remains a leader on the cutting edge of new developments in the construction of world-class instruments with a strong goodwill of important artists, concert halls and music universities worldwide.

The story begins in the 1820s with the Steingraeber & Söhne piano factory in Thuringia. Eduard Steingraeber, a member of the second generation of piano builders, moved to Bayreuth in 1852. There, he combined “Viennese” and “English” actions to produce his “opus 1,” a revolutionary masterpiece. Steingraeber pianos have been awarded international prizes on a regular basis since 1867. And in 1906, world-famous designers began to fashion piano cases for Steingraeber. Udo Schmidt-Steingraeber, a sixth-generation family member, has headed up the firm since 1980, with the seventh generation already waiting in the wings.

Not only has the family tradition remained strong; so has the historic residence of the firm. Steingraeber Haus (1754) is the only private palace in unique Bayreuth rococo style to have been preserved largely in original condition. In the “Rococo Hall”, for example, the original Liszt grand piano (1873) can be seen and heard. The piano factory has been located directly next door since 1898. Guests who come to select a Steingraeber piano can stay in the artist studio next to the “Chamber Music Hall” by the grand pianos in the grand piano showroom (“Flügelhaus”). And Steingraeber Haus remains a meeting place for artists to this day. Around seventy events take place in the two concert halls at Steingraeber Haus each year. Pianists often come up with improvements, rediscover something or even provide the impetus for new patents. So, the Steingraeber Piano Company always has its finger on the pulse of innovation.
