Sumaq Qara is a company owned by three sisters in the Ayacucho region. Yuli, Elile and Katy Torres were born in Ayacucho but had to flee the area in the 1980s. This region was then ravaged by guerrilla warfare deployed by The Shining Path. The Shining Path, a terrorist organization, was responsible for severe human rights violations and a reign of violent brutality. After the capture of Shining Path leader Abimal Guzman in 1992, the organization largely disbanded, but the devastation to the Peruvian countryside and rural populations will take many years to recover from. Until 2004, for more than 20 years the three sisters dedicated their lives to help female victims of domestic and terroristic violence in Ayacucho.

Inspired by their father, a traditional tanner, the first products of Sumaq Qara were leather wallets, purses and belts with embroidered motives. In 2006, Sumaq Qara won an award for rescuing and preserving traditional handicrafts, handed out by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru. Since the receiving of this award, Sumaq Qara is growing rapidly.

Started with only a few women in 2004, ten years later the company works with some 800 women. Today, these three sisters of Sumaq Qara are highly celebreated with prices, accolades and awards for successful women.

By training artisans to produce quality handcrafts, the organization offers the community a foothold in the global marketplace, helping to create greater income-generating opportunities for local women.

The main goal for Sumaq Qara is to empower women. By gaining their own income; women who work for Sumaq Qara are less dependable on their husbands of family.
