Sumitomo Chemical is devoting our efforts to the development of polymer organic light emitting diodes (PLEDs), which are gaining attention as a next-generation lighting technology.
In 1989 Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (Sumitomo Chemical) launched polymer OLED (PLED) research. In 2005 Sumitomo Chemical and Cambridge Display Technology Ltd. (CDT) formed a strategic partnership (JV) in PLED development.
In recent years, Sumitomo Chemical has accelerated PLED R&D market penetration by acquiring CDT as a subsidiary in 2007, followed by the opening of a new research institute, the Electronic Devices Development Center, in Ehime (2008).
In 2011 Tsukuba Research Laboratory was reorganized into Advanced Materials Research Laboratory and Tsukuba Material Development Laboratory, where PLED R&D is currently based.
We are expanding in the field of printed electronics, with initiatives in PLED lighting, PLED materials for displays, polymer photovoltaic cells, and organic semiconductors.
