In 1984, Tobias Grau started out as a freelance designer in Hamburg, doing interior design assignments for the offices of small companies and for fashion stores. The lighting and furniture designs he created for these interiors were implemented on a per-project basis. On the basis of this work, Tobias Grau developed his first serially produced luminaire collection, which he launched under his own name in 1987 and has subsequently expanded into a premium lighting brand, assisted by his wife Franziska Grau since 1992. Today, TOBIAS GRAU is well known for its high quality luminaires in both the residential and commercial sectors. A symbiosis of design, materials and technology characterise the products, which are designed by Tobias Grau and developed by his in-house team to series production readiness. Since 2002, the program has been complemented by a series of decorative luminaires made for the project area, especially for office lighting. In 2008, the collection was extended to include a switch and socket program. The products have been awarded numerous highly esteemed design prizes. The firm has its headquarters on the outskirts of Hamburg. This is where the development, final assembly, shipping, service and distribution of all the company’s products takes place. Supported by an extensive shop-in-shop system that reflects the brand identity, the products are sold via approx. 800 exclusive retailers specialising in home and office interiors and lighting in more than 50 countries. In addition, the company Tobias Grau operates 7 of its own stores within Germany, located in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart and Munich. It utilises an online shop for its customers within Europe that also incorporates the interests of its retailers. In recent years, the development of new luminaires with LED technology has taken centre stage, as the economic and technical advantages of the LED allows the possibility of new forms and innovative products. A vast number office and hotel projects in Germany and abroad, can be realized with these luminaires. Under the direction of Franziska Grau and Tobias Grau, the company currently employs 150 people.
