Handmade paper from Nepal – so called „lokta paper“ has an age old tradition in Nepal: official documents, prayer books, important texts/ scripts and of course wrapping – for all these purposes lokta paper has been and is still being used.
We have started dealing and working with Nepal about 30 years back, starting with handicraft items which were available on the market, but very soon we worked with our own designs which we are still doing until today.
Nowadays we are working with different suppliers – mainly family owned smaller businesses – same like us. We see that the working conditions for the workers are good and that the wages paid are according to the upper standard wages of Nepal. We know most of our suppliers since more than 10-15 years, so we trust them in this matter. And we also trust them that they will treat the earth we are living in as well as possible and that the use of the lokta is not extensive, but still sustainable and that the Lokta plant will survive and regrow in the naturally given timelines. We try to use as many natural and waterbased colours as possible – still some colours are only to be found in chemical ways, but where this is needed, we see that the colours are azo-free and according to European standards.
Since the beginning of our trade with Nepal lies in the development cooperation for which we went to Nepal and due to which we lived there for many years, we really care about the country and even more for the people of the country. Since that time we are dealing with the coutry and we are always visiting the country and our producers, so we always see what is changing and what can still be done and in this sense have a fruitfull co-operation with all our suppliers.
We are enjoying working with Nepal and it´s products in different ways: on the one hand we can support the people in a poor country by giving them work and therefore food and a living. Even more so as we are supporting an age old tradition and age old craftmensship which is kept alove and turned into modern designs, which we think is always a good thing to do. To prevent the traditions from being forgotten, but to also add a new line along the old ways to give things a future. And on the other hand, we are working with a sustainable – regrowing plant – which also gives the nature in this country a chance – as this plant needs space – so therefore land is saved and also in the remote areas work is being given – which is rare in these days.
