As a West Saxon centre of industry and trade, and particularly as an important location in the automobile industry, Zwickau has enjoyed a long tradition as a home of technological education where highly qualified industrial specialists are produced.

The West Saxon University of Applied Sciences continues this tradition in education and research and since 1992 has expanded to include locations in Reichenbach, Schneeberg and Markneukirchen. A modern university education i.e. practice-oriented teaching, steadily integrating research and development as well as technology transfer is offered by an experienced teaching staff and sophisticated technological equipment. The University currently offers a wide range of academic programs in the areas of engineering, economics and life quality along with a number of specializations, courses with integrated or additional vocational training and courses in continuing education.

Faculty Angewandte Kunst Schneeberg (AKS), BA-programme „Design“ and Master-programme „Design“

fields of study Fashion Design, Wood Design, Textile Art / Textile Design

The programme offers BA-degrees in Fashion Design, Wood Design and Textile Art / Textile Design. The comprehensive degree programme focuses on experimental yet functional design in a practice-oriented context. The real-world curriculum enables our students to work successfully in many fields of design. Various complex design projects combine the aspects of design quality, functionality, creativity and technology. Core of the studies is the connection of craftsmanship with creative power.

Traditional workshop and studio work is of major importance for AKS. It helps to develop and facilitate the understanding of complex connections between experimental and practical work. Our working conditions perfectly match this concept. The modern and well-equipped studios and workshops enable our design students to turn their creative ideas into models and prototypes. Close cooperation with partners in the industry and the research is an essential part of the programme.

Institute for Textile and Leather Technology (ITL) of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Vehicle Building, BA-programme „Textile Structure and Technology”; Master-programme „Textile Structure and Technology”

fields of study Functional Textiles and Textiles and Leather for Automotive Components

The ITL educates professionals in prospective textile disciplines. It extends its offer to new specializations in which progressive technology is implemented, especially in the field of technical and smart textiles. These can be classified, for example into medical textiles, textiles for automotive industry, for the building trade and agriculture, for filtration, and smart textiles. The newest results of science and research improve and extend study possibilities.

Students are also involved in scientific work. The ITL closely collaborates with several industrial enterprises and institutes, to organize a traineeship for students and to have research and development projects together. Furthermore the students have the possibility to get useful knowledge of the other engineer sciences.

The ITL provides education and academic research and development in accordance with the requirements of modern textile industry.

Students of the „Mechanical Engineering” (Diploma) and „Business & Engineering” (Diploma) have the opportunity to choose a textile emphasis.
