Our company:

Traditional firm Backhausen - internationally renowned for exclusive interior textiles inspired by art – celebrated its 160-year anniversary last year.

Backhausen interior textiles GmbH has its 160-year company anniversary this year. Since its foundation in Vienna in 1849, the company has steadily increased its commitment to working with internationally acclaimed Austrian artists. From Kolo Moser to Hans Hollein to Ernst Fuchs and Peter Kogler, famous artists have turned their skills to the design and decor of interior furnishings. In 1870 the company moved its production to Hoheneich in Waldviertel (NÖ).

In 1888 the family-run company was awarded the title “K. & K. Hoflieferant”, suppliers to the Imperial family. Backhausen was also a key supplier on the world-famous “Wiener Werkstätte” (1903 - 1932). With more than 3,500 original designs by over 300 artists, the company holds the world’s most comprehensive archive of historic textile designs. These designs are housed in Wiener-Werkstätte-Textilmuseum in the basement of the flagship store on Schwarzenbergstraße 10, Vienna.

Nowadays, as in the past, Backhausen supplies design textiles to numerous representative buildings at home and abroad. While these formerly included the Vienna State Opera, Austrian Parliament, the Burgtheater and the Imperial Palaces, the range today takes in Vienna’s UNO-City, the Philharmonic Hall in New York, right through to Moscow’s Pushkin Museum and the Suntory Concert Hall in Tokyo.

The company’s innovations include three-dimensional fabric with woven folds as well as the first environmentally friendly and 100%-recyclable flame-retardant material from Trevira CS. This special material, which goes by the brand name Returnity®, is based on the cradle-to-cradle philosophy, hence at the end of its long life, the fabric can be returned and recycled and start a new life as a new product.

The company exports to 40 countries across the globe.
