BasofilĀ® fiber was developed in the laboratories of BASF AG in the 1980s. A small pilot facility produced fiber in Germany until larger facilities were constructed. In 1996, nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, a large scale production plant was installed. Since that time this plant has been the sole source of Basofil fiber worldwide.

In July 2002 BASF sold the Basofil fiber business and Basofil Fibers, LLC was formed. The company is now headquartered in Enka, North Carolina in conjunction with the manufacturing plant.

In February 2007 a sister company, Basofil Solutions, formed to facilitate the development and sale of products containing BasofilĀ® fiber in the home furnishings industry.
