Group Profile

Gruppo Cordenons operates under the guidance of Mr. Ferruccio Gilberti, the latest representative of a family that has been producing special paper for four generations.
The group’s productive units are rich in ancient traditions and located in Cordenons and Scurelle, Italy, and Malmedy, Belgium. The group is equipped with the most advanced technology available and works with success in the world’s most competitive markets by preserving all its original dedication and commitment in the production of special and precious types of paper that evoke the charm of paper made by hand.

The earliest historical reference to Cartiera di Cordenons dates back to 1630 when the enterprise was owned by the Counts Avanzo. In 1730, the business was sold to notable local entrepreneurs, the Galvani Family. Acknowledgements of the importance of the “Cartiera de Cordenon” - official supplier of paper to the Venetian Republic – were issued by the Senate of Doges in this period.
Operating under the control of the Gilberti Family since 1984, the paper mill stands now completely renovated, and continues producing special paper of the highest quality.

The Cartiera di Scurelle was set up in the Valsugana area in 1715 and subsequently run by various wealthy Venetian families over the centuries. In 1936, the mill was acquired by Senator Beniamino Donzelli, already owner of one of the leading Italian paper mills, who together with son-in-law Ferruccio Gilberti began a series of strategic investments that put the paper mill back in business.
In 1973, the mill began specialising in the production of fine paper under the direction of the Gilberti Family.

In a strategic position on the Hautes Fagnes streams with a textile industry located conveniently nearby for the rags required as raw materials, a mill for paper was installed in Malmedy, Belgium in 1726.
In 1801, the Steinbach Family purchased the Malmedy paper mill and made renovations that raised the annual production of photographic paper to 25000 reams in 1850, an output exported all over the world. Following the Second World War, the paper mill became part of the Intermills Group until, after a series of ups and downs, it was acquired by Gruppo Cordenons SpA in 1997.
