Aftermarket organisations for automotive parts and accessories as well as Special OE

A sales partner in demand worldwide
In the Business Division Aftermarket, Hella has one of the world's largest aftermarket organisations for automotive parts and accessories, with its own sales companies and partners in more than 100 countries worldwide . This network supplies the automotive aftermarket and garages with extensive and constantly growing parts ranges in the core fields of competence of Lighting, Electrics, Electronics and Thermal Management. In addition, the aftermarket and garages receive effective sales support, such as in the form of a modern and fast information and ordering system, as well as competent technical service. Moreover, Hella serves the original-equipment industry for special and niche vehicles (Special OE).

Strategic development of the product range
Hella supplies the automotive aftermarket with spare parts and accessories - on the one hand from its own production facilities in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, and on the other hand through sales cooperation with well-known parts manufacturers that use the worldwide Hella sales network. In this way Hella considerably expanded the product range for motor-vehicle lighting through an exclusive sales partnership with Visteon for lighting devices for the European aftermarket, for example. Furthermore, there is the continuous range development of in-house production, which most recently has been supported by various original-equipment projects for noted European manufacturers. These factors contribute to Hella adequately meeting increased market dynamism and ever more intensive competition in the aftermarket.

Extend range coverage in the case of lighting at a high level
In this segment, Hella has an especially wide and deep range of lighting spare parts in Europe. This is because with its high degree of technological competence, Hella is a valued partner of the automotive industry and can thus develop range coverage. Therefore, Hella was able most recently to realise series production of the first full-LED headlight. In the case of accessories, the range on offer extends from auxiliary lights, via xenon headlights and retrofit headlights with dynamic bend lighting, to combination rearlights and retrofit daytime running lights. In relation to this, the product range was developed in particular through innovative LED technology and also through retrofit Upgrade headlights (e.g. with the halogen twin headlight for the Volkswagen Tiguan), through Upgrade combination rearlights (e.g. for the Peugeot 107 and the Citroën C1 of the same design) and through professional headlights for off-road vehicles and trucks (e.g. through the Rallye 3003).

Develop strong position in the case of Electrics/Electronics in a targeted manner
Due to distinct network capability with partners and cooperation, Hella has a high level of product competence in the product division of automotive electronics. The leading market position of Hella in Europe has been further strengthened. In particular in the case of the product lines of sensors and actuators, the strategy is determined by high market growth. For the finishing touch, Hella has included new product groups such as EGR valves and ignition coils in the parts range.
Through continuous range development in the case of vehicle-specific switches (oil-pressure, stop-light, transmission and thermal switches) Hella achieves a market coverage in Europe of more than 65 percent. New to the market is a range of module switches especially for use in commercial and special vehicles. The existing range of relays will be continuously extended through new products form the joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer Hongfa and the takeover of relays of a further Asian manufacturer.

High service competence in the case of sales support
Sales and aftermarket marketing are represented in all key global markets via local in-house sales companies and offices. Building on the "4+2 strategy", Hella offers fast-growing product ranges with high market coverage for lighting, electrics, electronics and thermal management, with approximately 23,000 parts. Through the worldwide logistics network, Hella guarantees your customers goods availability of 95 percent. To promote sales of these products, an acknowledged high level of service competence was built up for sales support and technical service, as well as in the case of data management. Hella has specifically extended garage support in terms of training, technical information and sales support. The network of Hella Service Partners currently includes 4,900 independent garages in 19 countries and is being developed further. With its technical service, Hella helps garages with practical training, technical data and a technical hotline for all questions on products and diagnostics. Regular market studies help to record the market growth fields and the needs of the customers, as well as to further develop the Hella sales strategies and service concepts.

Entry into the diagnostics industry
At the end of January 2008 Hella successfully launched the new data and diagnostic system "Hella DDS" in ten European countries and nine European language versions. With this, Hella helps independent garages to master ever more complex vehicle electronics and the related challenges. The overall package combines technical motor-vehicle data (Hella DDS 100) with a diagnostic interface (Hella DDS 200). Access to the Hella spare-parts catalogue makes it a user-friendly, fully integrated complete system. With information and diagnostics for more than 45 vehicle makes with around 33,500 models, Hella DDS is already meeting to a high degree the practical requirements of garages. The aim is to continuously increase the data stock. The systems is sold via wholesalers. For the coming fiscal year, we are planning introduction in a further ten countries, the integration of additional functions, as well as an online version.

Leading supplier in the thermal management segment
The joint venture "Behr Hella Service GmbH" (BHS), which was started in 2005, is one of the leading suppliers in the product division Thermal Management. With over 6,000 items for vehicle air conditioning and engine cooling in more than 20 product groups, BHS provides optimum coverage of the needs of the aftermarket and garages - from O-rings and small parts, via spare parts and tools, to air-conditioning service units. Thanks to constant growth and worldwide expansion, the joint-venture company is a convincing choice. The competitive advantages of BHS in this strongly-growing product segment are proximity to the market and the high level of competence in the original-equipment sector, service and logistics.

Environmentally-friendly products for fuel and CO2 reduction
The energy balance of a car can be optimised by using even apparently small areas of potential. The light and electronics specialist Hella has a broad technology portfolio of series solutions which can in total amount around 20 percent less CO2 emissions. Here are a few examples:
Lighting: In comparison with bulbs, xenon headlights are more economical with current. In terms of the entire lighting system, a car with xenon light and conventional bulbs in the combination rearlights saves about one quarter of the energy in comparison with a halogen system. The saving would increase to about 40 percent if the combination rearlights were fully equipped with LEDs. If all passenger cars registered in Germany were equipped with xenon headlights and LED combination rearlights, the CO2 balance would be reduced by approximately 2.6 million tons per year. A further ideal application for LEDs is daytime running light. Special daytime running lights with LEDs almost completely neutralise the additional consumption of 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres which would otherwise arise (with exterior lighting fully switched on).
Electronics: One kilowatt hour of electricity in a car makes a difference of around 1.3 litres of fuel. Intelligent electronics solutions from Hella contribute both to increasing the efficiency of electricity production and to reducing energy consumption. An intelligent control unit for the fuel pump from Hella controls the power of the pump according to the requirements of the engine at the time, thereby saving part of its consumption of over 100 watts (0.5 grams of CO2 per kilometre). A sensor for fuel quality avoids up to 30 grams of CO2 per start.
Optimum thermal management: provides further possibilities of savings. Thus, with blower control via pulse-width modulation and flow-optimised air channels, the energy consumption of the systems can be brought down. In the case of engine cooling, through coolant standstill when warming-up, cooled exhaust-gas recirculation and charge-air cooling, savings of around 0.35 litres or 8.4 grams of CO2 per kilometre are possible.

Customer-oriented development and production competence
The business unit Special OE develops, produces and markets products for lighting technology and electrics/electronics for customer target groups outside the automotive passenger-car sector. This includes manufacturers of agricultural and construction machinery, fork-lift trucks, commercial-vehicle trailers, buses, motorhomes, motorbikes, snowmobiles, ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), mining vehicles, boats, as well as authority vehicles and ambulances. The vision of this business unit of striving in the respective customer segments worldwide for the top position in all key markets has already been successfully achieved in Europe in many areas in the case of lighting products. Hella has laid the foundations for successful globalisation and growing market shares outside Europe, with its own development and production locations in India and China, as well as in the Philippines and New Zealand.
