In 1590, Demenge Harlachol built a paper mill in the village of Lana which later developed closer ties with the Nouvelle Manufacture de Papier (New Paper Factory). This link led to the creation of prestigious 100%-cotton papers, produced on a cylinder mould, and extremely fine watermarks. So Lana papers were used for the first reissue of the Gutenberg Bible and, as time went on, for the publication of original works by Voltaire and Jules Verne. Legend even has it that Winston Churchill, who was a talented painter in watercolours, said that Lana papers reminded him of his wife’s velvety skin. This constant striving after quality means that Lana is now the perfect partner for all kinds of artists, from those using conventional techniques through to those working with new technologies.
