Lascaux Colours & Restauro Barbara Diethelm AG

In the four decades following the founding of the company by Alois K. Diethelm in 1963, Lascaux has become one of the world’s leading producers of water-based artists’ colours as well as products used for restoration.

Inspired and advised in his endeavours by artist friends, Alois K. Diethelm was regarded as a pioneer in the development of acrylic paints. Committed to his drive for top quality, he always searched for better results than those that were already available. Professional artists were the first to discover Lascaux, soon followed by art teachers, architects, art therapists, graphic designers as well as restorers, curators and international museums. Over the years a range of products has been created, which meets the highest of artistic, material and technical demands, thus achieving recognition from both artists and restorers.

Today Lascaux is directed by the founder’s daughter, herself a painter, who together with her employees strives for the impressive goal of top-ranking products coupled with innovative growth. As has always been the case, the creative exchange with artists and users from related fields is of enormous importance - the success of a colour concept being largely dependent upon adapting ideas and perceptions to accompany changing times. From this standpoint, a culture emerges that places the individual and creativity at the centre of all company activities.

With Heart and Hand

For Lascaux, the process of producing paints is one of constant challenge and inquiry. Modern techniques and scientific know-how are just as essential as accuracy of craftsmanship, mindfulness, love and passion. The process begins with the selection of only top-quality raw materials, which are prepared according to traditional handcrafted methods, and continues to the final control of the product prior to distribution. Each hue of a colour range is produced from an individual formula, and can contain as many as 20 different components.

Advice and Assistance

As experience from this field has shown, a colour system will endure only as long as its aesthetic as well as its technical qualities can be convincingly conveyed. Lascaux has thus made available to customers a basic training program in artists’ materials and their colouristic and handling properties. This includes a practical course in assisting with professional use and application, as well as documented information, technical data and colour charts. In addition, a service telephone is available for the purpose of addressing individual problems and questions concerning application processes. This is an integral part of Lascaux’s support services and is utilised by individuals world-wide.

Responsibility for the Environment

Water is essential to life. It is the responsibility of mankind to protect and maintain this precious life. Since the existence of the company, Lascaux has been comprised of water-based systems. In the production and cleaning processes, only water is used. Moreover, Lascaux colours are largely produced without the use of solvents and have undergone toxicological testing. They fulfill both Swiss and United States standards, qualifying respectively as “non-toxic” and “no health labeling required.” One exception to this is cadmium colours, which are correspondingly labeled. In the spirit of stewardship, the company’s own water treatment plant, designed specifically to meet its needs, results in more than two millions litres of clean water per year.

Unity as Principle

As a manufacturer, Lascaux trades in innovative and environmentally conscious products based upon actively practised principles. Two women share the role of leadership, not only regarding responsibility for the company but also for the principles of a holistic company philosophy. Universal laws of nature also embody the nature of Lascaux. According to the alchemical precept, “As above so below, as without so within,” the areas both inside and outside of the company are linked with one another and are in constant dialogue. The leadership style is one of co-operation and communication, which both challenges and encourages the creative potential of each employee. It also creates work procedures which are just as efficient as they are harmonic. An expounded company goal is not one of growth at any cost, rather one of continued expansion of quality. With the best possible materials, top-quality products, technical competence and advice, Lascaux stands in service to creativity and ensures a long-term continuance of the company.

A Path to the 21st Century

With the turn of the century, not only does an epoch of unparalleled opposites come to a close, but with it a cycle also completes itself upon whose beginning the name Lascaux is written. Lascaux is a well-known place in the Dordogne, France, where Palaeolithic cave paintings were discovered. These cave paintings connect contemporary man with the first appearance of a consciousness related to universal vital forces and the cosmic order of all creation. The intensity of this representation and its magic presence prevails as a timeless metaphor for everything living. Lascaux is consequently not only a culturally historical concept, but also a bridge and guide to a new era.

A first guiding step has already met with success in association with two of the most recent developments from Lascaux, that of the Siriusâ Primary System and the Resonanceâ Gouache. The Siriusâ Primary System is based upon an understanding of cosmic harmony and on an equal importance of light and dark; the knowledge of universal oneness and of polarities offering complimentary vital energies rather than existing merely as opposites. Resonanceâ Gouache is an innovative new development with very specific qualities: these colours support and encourage the expression of the soul and have a harmonising effect on the individual and the environment due to their vibratory and aromatic components. With this holistic outlook, Lascaux creates a bridge to the 21st century - to a colourful, conscious future.
