Product description

At the Derby is a good exemple of how Lladró artists are able to combine the thrill of the race with the perfect anatomy of the purebred. Measuring one meter long, this sculpture transports us to the Epsom or Kentucky derbies, to all the excitement, thrills and color of the best horse races. It is amazing to see these horses literally “running”, an effect attibuted to the scrupulous technical conception of the artists at The City of Porcelain. Technically speaking, this creation is highly complex, and they have managed to capture the mobility and balance so well that, more than running, the horses actually seem to be suspended in mid-air. This sensation of speed even further accentuates the perfect anatomy of these majestic animals.

At the Derby is a piece absolutely charged with energy and full of the coloring so characteristic of inspirational races such as the Epsom Derby in the United Kingdom or the Kentucky Derby in the USA. Inspired by such famous horse races the sculptor has not only faithfully reproduced the anatomy of these horses, but he has also captured all the excitement, speed and energy of the race in a technically difficult composition. The horses seem to be suspended in the air and to achieve this visual effect a thorough meticulous previous study was required. The horse in the lead is directly joined to the thick hedge acting as a backdrop, whilst in the pair of jockeys immediately behind, the horses are joined together and the one closer to the porcelain hedge is connected to it, using it as support. Technically speaking, the porcelain hedge added an extra challenge for the piece, as all the weight of the horses rests on it. Particularly noteworthy in this piece is the chromatic wealth, not only in the jockeys’ costumes, decorated with more intense and purer reds, greens… compared to the usual Lladró palette, but also in the hedge itself, decorated with various different tones achieved through a combination of glazes.
