What The Hell Is Lomography?

How Everything Started
In the early 1990’s we, at that time students in Vienna, Austria, discovered a small enigmatic Russian camera; the Lomo Kompakt Automat. Together we started a new style of artistic experimental photography with our first unorthodox snapshot cavorts. Our approach: taking as many photographs (Lomographs) as possible in the most impossible of situations and from the most unusual of positions possible, and then having them developed as cheaply as possible. The result was a flood of authentic, colourful, crazy, off-the-wall and unfamiliar snapshots, shot by many people and mounted on panels to form a sea of thousands of Lomographs; the LomoWalls. Exhibitions, interactive projects, events and live visuals held and performed all over the world with millions of Lomographic snapshots have been the most significant forms of Lomographic communication since the beginning. The images provided by tens of thousands of Lomographic amateurs, combined with the space, the exhibition architecture, the interactive programme and the international communication have become the hallmark of Lomographic projects. The presentations are held in galleries, museums, people's homes, clubs, bars, shops, abandoned buildings, planetariums, factories or stations, and are accompanied by programmes of photo competitions and events with special visual and music performances (major shows have been held in Moscow, New York, Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Seoul, Havana, Zurich, Cologne, Madrid, Cairo, Frankfurt, Dubai, Oslo, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Beijing, London and many other cities, where up to 100,000 Lomographic images were displayed at a time).

What started out spontaneously as an artistic approach to photography in the Vienna underground scene soon developed into an international socio-cultural movement, using photography as a creative approach to communicating, absorbing and capturing the world. Today we are a globally active organization dedicated to experimental and creative snapshot photography.

The Lomography World Archive
And we are busy beavering away these millions of submitted Lomographs, on and on, in the perpetually ongoing Lomographic Sisyphus project: The Lomography World Archive. This archive seeks to document the incredible planet around us in a never-ending stream, a visual diary by various individuals of different cultures; the biggest ever-growing and ongoing snapshot portrait of the planet. This is the most comprehensive archive of artistic snapshots of all time, a collection of millions of the wackiest, most exciting and most impossible little sights and moments of our time. In fact, the archive – now counting over 4 MILLION IMAGES! - is growing and growing and growing on a daily, hourly, by the minute!

Lomography Gallery Shop
Everybody loves shopping! And Lomographers are no exception. This is why it is our first duty to serve our curious community with the hottest products that the Lomography and photography world has to offer. To ease this endless urge for new tools and accessories, Lomography offers the quick, painless and never-ending road to online shopping. And, in fact, our international online shop sites do just fine. But our Lomographers asked for more: they dreamt of a place where they would have straight and immediate access to their favourite Lomography products. A place that would bid them the first-hand experience of touching, feeling, smelling, holding, hugging and, plain and simple, being with the whole uncensored collection of Lomography products, while offering a base for Lomographic meet-ups, activities, gallery space for exhibitions and exclusive Lomography design and architecture. The new Lomography Gallery Shop concept was devised.

Lomography and the analogue lifestyle
The real trend of Lomography lies in the analogue lifestyle and existence itself. People have recognized the specific and persuading creative qualities of analogue photography - ranging from the strong colours, to the unique atmosphere and to image resolution but, most importantly maybe, the never-ending exhilarating techniques and possibilities that methods such as cross processing, multiple exposure, different film types (including out-dated film), under and over exposure, light leaks and more have to offer. Chance and accident play a big roll in all of this: there is no control, no way of knowing the final result until the final print is in your hand. These prints too give analogue photography this very special feeling that digital photography misses.

Lomography is not about short-time trends and momentary lifestyle but about creative photo-art, the act of photographing in itself, the social interactions and the resulting images. The basic Lomographic idea 'be fast, don't think, be open-minded towards your environment, absorb everything, collect and enjoy being communicative!' has spread into an approach of awareness that is shared throughout the Lomographic network.

Lomography tools
The idea of Lomography encompasses an interactive, democratic, social, cultural, vivid, blurred and crazy way of life. This development has been supported by the marketing of special 'tools' that have since been 'discovered' or specially developed by us for 'everyday artists': extraordinary but very affordable snapshot cameras photographic accessories such as special bags and fashion, Lomographic publications and more

The Lomographic Society International constantly works on developing and producing Lomography cameras and photography accessory products which are strongly oriented to the worldwide Lomography community’s interests who demand new challenging Lomographic tools.

Lomography has also collaborated with numerous artists (such as Dalek, The White Stripes, and Anna Sui) and organizations (such as Absolut, Mini, Urban Outfitters, MTV and Colette) to develop special edition cameras, community events and competitions.

Our online stores
deliver worldwide and offer the complete collection of Lomographic tools and accessories (as well as some online exclusives).
