The Society of Slovene Composers (DSS) is a voluntary professional association of composers and musicologists. It had been founded on December 22, 1945.
Basic tasks of the Society are to instigate the creation of new Slovene music, to publish scores as well as CDs and tapes etc., to organize concerts of contemporary Slovene music, to co-operate with similar institutions abroad, to represent and promote Slovene composers and to provide legal protection on their behalf, to represent foreign publishers.
In the beginning of the Thirties of the 20th century a few composers, among them Slavko Osterc, became members of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) and started working systematically on promoting Slovene composers and protecting their rights. The founding of the Society opened up significant new opportunities for Slovene composers: the Society started out by organizing public performances, then in 1954 it widened its field of activity by incorporating a publishing section (Edicije DSS) and establishing contacts with other European publishing houses. Up to the present day, Edicije DSS published 1.900 works by Slovene composers. The Society takes care of the recordings of contemporary Slovene music on disc. So far the series Ars Slovenica, presenting composers portraits, boasts an output of 60 CDs in total. Since 1972 the Society acts as the Slovene representative for the following European music publishers: Editio Musica Budapest, Edition Peters - Frankfurt, Breitkopf & Härtel - Wiesbaden, Schott Music International - Mainz, Universal Edition - Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes - London. The Society is the official representative for all loans of scores and material from the above mentioned publishing houses for the whole of Slovenia.
The Society also hosts an active concert schedule. In addition to the Concert Atelier series and international concert activities, the Society also organises the Night of Slovene Composers, an evening-length concert of contemporary Slovene classical music, along with the series of concerts for young audiences called From Slovene Composers to Young Music Audiences and the Unicum international biennial contemporary music festival, as well as other various concerts in co-operation with related music institutions in Slovenia. Also operating under the aegis of the society’s concert activities is the Chamber Orchestra of Soloists of the Society of Slovene Composers. Since 1991 the Society of Slovene Composers has functioned as an independent formation. Currently the Society counts 116 members. Under its wings, individual sections take care of different music genres: the section for church music (1999), the Young Composers’ Club (2000), the section for jazz and popular music (2001), the section for choral music (2001), the section for music in teaching (2002) and – last but not least – the section for electro-acoustic music (2002). The Society founded its own section of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM); they organized the World Music Days (WMD) in 2003.
The activities of the Society are kindly subsidised by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and are further made possible with financial contributions of the City of Ljubljana, SAZAS, Radio Slovenia and Plesko Printing Services.
