Sugihara Washipaper Inc. - Japanese paper, Wrapping, Stationery, Writing-Paper Sets, Screens

Echizen in Fukui prefecture is known throughout Japan as the home of traditional Japanese paper (washi). The industry dates back to the fourth century, and the production of paper for writing and making shoji screens has continued ever since. From the 19th century, the industry was also entrusted with the production of banknotes, mainly as a result of their success in incorporating watermarks to prevent forgery.

Now it is the home of a wide variety of contemporary products using handmade paper. These range from laser-printed business cards to lighting and even to fashion materials. Its lacquered washi makes the finest wallpaper in the world. The Sugihara Company provides a gateway through which the skills of the papermaker can be connected with the rest of the world. Business inquiries about paper products throughout Japan can be made directly through Sugihara.

Sugihara also has its own original lines. Lacquer-coated placemats (uruwashi) can be wiped off and used again and again. “Animal” paper can be torn in many pieces to make memos – cute! “Chigitte” paper can be printed to produce highly individual business cards. Finally, we have been able to produce a completely new type of roller blind, the first in the world to be made out of genuine handmade paper.
