Wenger was founded in 1893 in the heart of the Swiss watch-making and micro-technology industry, known today as the region of Jura. Innovation, precision, quality of craftsmanship and high technical and aesthetic requirements have always been very important values for the watch-making as well as for the cutlery industry. These attributes are also the ones Wenger is based upon. In a very short period of time, the company became a distributor of a great variety of pocket, butcher, kitchen and speciality knives, expanding therefore its range of products.

Already in 1901, Wenger was able to obtain the confidence of the Swiss Army thanks to its high quality standard and its expert knowledge, becoming therefore a genuine supplier of the Swiss Army knife. In 1886, the Commander-in-Chief of the Army decided to equip every soldier with a penknife. New functions were added three years later: a screwdriver for stripping down a gun, tin openers for mealtimes, and a reamer. The principle of condensing a multitude of functions into the smallest space possible was born. Today, Wenger Knives’ most complex model includes 87 tools and 141 functions, known as “Giant Knife 2007”.

Wenger SA is located in Delémont. With its 150 employees, it is one of the most important enterprises of the regional labour market as well as the manufacturing industry of Jura. The famous pocket knife occupies a major part of Wenger’s production. This important item represents a daily production of up to 22,000 units. Although widely imitated since its initiation, the Swibo® was the first butcher’s knife to have adopted a synthetic, ergonomic handle with a seal on the blade, becoming considerably safer and more hygienic. A similar line of knives – even though more oriented towards professional chefs’ and discriminating amateur cooks’ needs – was developed under the Grand Maître label. Wenger produces about 5,000 of these professional knives a day.

In 1997, Wenger Watch SA was founded in Biel/Bienne as a subsidiary. Today, a collection of around 150 different watch models are sold in over 80 countries worldwide.

In May 2005, Wenger SA joined the Victorinox Group. According to the strategy of the group, both brands are focusing on different positionings. Victorinox, with its USB-key knives and digital MP3 drives, is without any doubt orientated towards the high-tech sector. On the contrary, Wenger is clearly focusing on the high-mech sector. In fact, Wenger develops and markets several high-mech products, tools and functions, such as the ergonomically-designed Evolution knife, with its patented screwdrivers and blade-blocking security system; scissors with micro-teeth and lever spring and, latest but not least, the EvoGrip line and the Swiss army knife with integrated nail clipper. During 2007, new items will be added to Wenger’s catalogue. In particular, the NewRanger knife collection and the Giant Knife 2007 (mentioned above) will be launched. The cutlery industry in the Jura region has always been leading in the development of mechanical solutions, and this will still be its main target in the future.
