Our company:

What is Magno?
Magno is the name of a product-series of the Indonesian designer Singgih Susilo Kartono from Temaggung on the island of Java. Main product of the series is the “wooden radio”. This radio is made in 16 hours of manual work and is even compatible with an iPod. Each radio is assembled component after component. It is numbered and tagged with the month and year of its production and therefore an individual piece of art and technique. Beside the wooden radio Kartono & his team are producing other stylish handcrafted radio-models as well as small wooden items like a desktop set.
The wooden radio has been awarded with the “Seattle Design Award” and the “Indonesia Good Design-price” and already got lots of attention in the worldwide media (e.g. Elle Decoration, Metropolis, Tomorrow). For the first time it is now available on the north European market.

What is the central idea behind Magno?
Magno shapes handicraft, modern design and technique into a unique and profitable symbiosis. This is the central idea that inspires Kartono and his work for many years – a context described nowadays with the term “Ecodesign”. Kartono is convinced that only handcrafted products are able to fill the gap that mass production has left in modern societies – if they are able to fulfill all technical expectations and meet the zeitgeist.

What about the production?
What started as an interims solution in the private house of the designer has now developed into an exemplary production-site with modern machines where thirty young men get a sound schooling in handicrafts.
The team works together in airy and light rooms that do not have the atmosphere of a production hall but involve the nature, the wind and natural light. It takes one year for the worker to learn the careful and correct handling of the wood until he is able to fit the demands of assembling this high-quality product. The production of each radio contains 20 different steps, where each step ends up with a quality control.

What about ecological and social targets?
An environmentally sustainable production process and fair social standards within the company are in the core of this project. For the designer and his team it is a basic condition that in the production of the wooden radio only wood gets used that comes from plantations. To make a statement that all his manufacturing activities should never harm the environment, Kartono replants every single tree that he has used. In addition he has started a “tree-planting-program” in cooperation with the local junior high school.
Besides the on-the-job-training the wooden radio secures the livelihood of many families in the area.

What about wooden radio?
The small company “wooden radio” is the exclusive direct importer of Magno for Germany, Austria, Swiss, Scandinavia and Great Britain. wooden radio is based in Hamburg and is managed by Oliver Errichiello and Dr. Arnd Zschiesche. Apart from business the social and ecological idea is in the focus of our proceeding.
