Yarns

Yarn is a general term describing a continuous line of interwoven fibres. The yarn producer turns the fibre into various wholesale yarn products of appropriate texture for embroidery, textiles, rope, crocheting, weaving, thread for hand- and machine-sewing, and knitting. Yarn can be constructed of natural and synthetic fibres and comes as one of two types; spun yarn or filament yarn. Natural fibres tend to be spun whereas filaments are generally extruded synthetics and are constructed as a continuous or multiple-stranded filament. The typical yarn supplier provides yarn for industrial textiles and for the handcrafter, and thus requires a range of business partners such as which productpilot.com provides access to.

The yarn manufacturer spins fibres into yarn by twisting the fibres together using two basic mechanical techniques, ring spinning and mule spinning. Hand spinning is still done, but generally as a cottage industry or by an individual artisan. Most animal fur can be spun, but sheep, goats, rabbits, and silk-worms produce the most commonly used fibres. The most frequently used plant fibres are made from seeds, stems and leaves. Cotton is a seed fibre, whereas jute, flax, bamboo, and hemp are stem fibres. As natural yarns are more sensitive to shrinking, wrinkling, staining, and fading, the yarn manufacturer may apply further treatments, such as mercerization, superwashing, and moth-proofing.

Wholesale yarn comes non-dyed or treated with a natural or an artificial dye in a single hue or multi-coloured. The variegated yarn provided by the yarn wholesaler includes tweed, ombre, self-striping, multi-coloured, and marled, each of which will produce its own effect when woven or knitted into fabric. Wholesale yarn destined for the handcrafter is sold in standardized skein weights of 25, 50 and 100 grams. Wholesale yarn is further classified by gauge or tension, which is a measurement of how many rows of stitching can be produced per inch on a standardized crochet hook or knitting needle.
